Dixon at the thriving town of Richland. This was our second visit to this place, our first visit being nine years ago, and many changes have taken place since then. The portion of the town at that time in the woods is now laid out into pretty streets and built up with handsome residences. The new ten thousand dollar brick schoolhouse is located in this new section and it would do credit to a town much larger than Richland. It is not quite finished, but will be in the next week or two. The school, which is ably presided over by Prof. Henderson, has now an attendance of 225 pupils, and will no doubt be larger when the new building is occupied. Although Richland has suffered greatly by fire she always comes again phoenix-like. A large part of the business portion was destroyed by fire last years, but most of the vacant lots have been covered by handsome brick store rooms, and others will soon be in course of construction. More recently the fertilizer factory was burned, but we learn that the owners, Messrs. Dixon and others, will rebuild this summer in time for the next guano season. They are also considering the question of building an oil mill to work in connection with the fertilizer plant and putting in a big ginnery with a Lowery round bale press. As it is in this county, there are many candidates on the go down there. Mr. G.R. Brown (everybody knows Rufe in this section) is a candidate for clerk of the superior court and it putting in good work with the dear people. It is really amusing to observe the many ways a candidate employs to secure votes. Rufe takes a negro man in buggy with him to do the plowing while he is talking with the voter. A man over on the river promised to work for him if he (the candidate) would send him a shepherd puppy, and Rufe was scouring Richland Saturday afternoon to find the coveted puppy. He finally found a negro boy with one and gave him a dollar for it. Richland is a progressive and prosperous little city, and is still on the improve.
