He was born in the State of New York, his father removed when he was quite young to North Carolina and settled near Guilford, and remained there during the revolution; he being the eldest son, it devolved on him to make a support with his mother’s assistance in consequence of his father being engaged in that trying epoch for independence [Revolutionary War.] He removed from there to Georgia, and settled in Washington county, and lived there for more than 40 years; and ten years ago he removed to Stewart county. He was a man of industrious and energetic habits, and was for more than 50 years a highly esteemed member of the Baptist church, and served more than 40 years as deacon. He bore his long illness of dropsy of the chest with the greatest patience. A widow and six children survives him, and a vast number of relatives scattered over the Southern States, will hear of his death with sorrow, for he was one of the best men and a most exemplary christian and citizen.
