Hill vjbhill@alltel.net August 9, 2004, 11:28 pm Stewart-Webster Journal, Thursday, September 10, 1970 Joseph H. Stephens Succumbs To Illness In Veterans Hospital Joseph H. Stephens, 74, war veteran and church man, of the Red Hill Community died in the Veterans Hospital in Tuskegee, Al about 8 p.m. Thursday September 3, after an illness of several months. He was admitted to the Veterans Hospital about two weeks ago. Born in Stewart County February 10, 1896, he was son of the late Curtis Alonza and Sarah Elizabeth Ellis Stephens. He was a farmer and a veteran of both WWI and WWII. He married Miss Jewell Jones of Stewart County on June 23, 1947 and the couple continued to reside in their native community. He was a member and deacon of the Red Hill Christian Church, and of the American Legion Post 128 at Richland. He was regarded as a fine citizen and christian gentlemen, and one who will long be missed by many friends and loved ones. Survivors include his wife and one son Joseph H. (Joey) Stepehsn, Jr and a number of neices and nephews. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Red Hill Christian Church, with the Rev. Joe Barnes and the Rev. Curtis Barnes officiating. The Mathis Quartet sand "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" with Mrs. Buddy Averett as accompanist. Burial was in the church cemetery with Campbell Funeral Home, Billy Poteet, director in charge of arrangements. Active pallbearers were great-nephews; Linwood Stephens, Buddy Harry, Alfred Hudson, Ernest Riles, James Burgamy, and Kenneth McNiel. An honorary escort was composed of John Frank Harry, Floyd Harry, Bobby Strickland, Merrill Smith, Buck Smith and Bill Morgan.
