Hill vjbhill@alltel.net August 28, 2004, 8:03 pm The Lumpkin Independent, May 26, 1922, Friday An Aged Lady Passed Away Saturday The death of Mrs. Mary Jane Scribner, beloved old Stewart County citizen occurred at the home of her daughter Mrs. J. A. Wood here about 2 0'clock Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Scribner has made her home in Brooklyn with another daughter Mrs. C. A. Stephens the larger portion of her later life, but much of her life was spent here where she was revered for her relationship to one of Lumpkin most appreciated families as much as for her own sweet and gentle characteristics. She was eighty-eight years of age and had been subject to weakening attacks for several months. Between these attacks she was remarkably bright, cheerful and active. With the exception of twelve years in Columbus, Ga Mrs. Scribner had lived the greater portion of her life in Stewart County. She had been married three times, each of these companions and three children preceded her in death. She had been a widow for several years before her demise. During the four-score and eight years of her life she has witnessed much in the South's changing history. She lived in Columbus when the last battle of the Civil War was fought there and came through the troublous days of reconstruction while rearing her children. Two daughters survive her. They are Mrs. J. A. Wood of this city and Mrs. C. A. Stephens of Brooklyn. She is also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchildren. She was an old and consistent member of the Baptist Church. Funeral services were conducted in the presence of a large concourse of friends by Rev. John W. Faulkner, pastor of Lumpkin Baptist Church. Interment was made in Lumpkin Methodist Cemetery Sunday morning at 10 0'clock. Out of town attendants were Mrs. C. A. Stephens, Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Stephens of Brooklyn. Pallbearers were: Messrs-- J. V. Castleberry, J. T. Holder, J. T. HUmber, E. E. Humber, W. W. Lewis and E. C. Hobbs.
