Salter, Rev. War veteran. Jesse was born Mar 26, 1824 [*tombstone]. He had numerous brothers and sisters including John Ross Salter (?1827-Aug 29, 1887); Elizabeth Salter (Dec 5, 1830-Nov 22, 1900) who married Renderson Cobb. Jesse married Aug 28, 1859 Lucinda Ruffin, the daughter of James J. and Sarah Averett Ruffin of Taylor County. Lucinda was born Dec 30, 1839. [Ruffin Bible]. They made their home in Sumter County, probably on the family farm as Jesse's father, James died 1855/60 and his mother by 1862. (estate papers 1862) Jan 18, 1866 - first child, Georgia Ann born and lived for 3 years, dying Jan 20, 1869. She was laid to rest in the Salter family cemetery where Great-Grandfather, Simon J. Salter (1760-1844 Rev Soldier); grandfather, James "Jim" Salter (?1790-1855/60?) and probably grandmother, Elizabeth Coulson Salter (1803?-1862?0 ? 1860, Eugene J. was born. He was alive in 1899 when his grandfather J.J. Ruffin's will was made, and is also mentioned in letters written in 1916 to Texas Ruffin family members. On Feb 10, 1909 he married Mattie Yeats (Yeates) 1910 Census Eugene 49 married 1 year : Mattie 34 1920 Census Eugene 56 Mattie 43 children: Eugene 6; Lola dau 4 1/2 ; Mollie 2 1/2 Living with them Jennie Yates, m-in-law; Lola sis-in-law Death Certificate: age 87 on 29 May 1948. He moved to Ardmore, Indian Territory by the time of his grandfather Ruffin's will. He was 34 when he married Fannie (1880 TX -1944) and they are both buried in Jefferson Co, Terrel Cemetery. [1930 Census Jefferson Co OK] In the year 1862, Jesse's father's [James] estate was divided. He had died around 1855, and probably his mother, Elizabeth died in 1862, thus the division of the land in the estate. ? 1867 Mary A. "Mollie" was born. Probably named after Lucinda's older sister who died as a child. She was only 4 when her mother died. She married W.E. Mitchell Dec 23, 1885 Sumter County. July 20, 1870 - Fannie (possibly named after Lucinda's younger sister) Both Lucinda and Fannie died on the same day, Sept 12, 1871. They are also buried in the Capt Simon J. Salter family cemetery. Jesse was left with Eugene, 10, Henry J, 8, and Mollie only 4. Did Lucinda's parents help out or was Jesse's mother, Elizabeth Salter still living? Jesse remarries Feb 29, 1872 to Victoria Plott in Sumter County. She was born in S.C. her father born in Scotland, and her mother, S.C. She is found in the 1910 Census in Sumter County as a widow having born 5 children, 4 living. Her brother, Jarrell, Perry? C Brother 62 [1848]GA AL SC lives with her as well as her daughter, Jennie [1881 born] married to J.M. Dupree 12 May 1907 Sumter Co marriages. 1901 marriage: Jesse Salter to Sallie Rooks Dec 19, 1901 Sumter Co. This was a child of Victoria and Jesse Salter. Jesse died Dec 21, 1900 and both he and Victoria are buried in Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery with tombstones "Our Father" "Mother" Jesse's death is reported in Daily T-R 12-27-1900.
