Feb. 5--The funeral of Brown Burkhalter yesterday afternoon at First Methodist church was largely attended. The services conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. M. Williams, assisted by Dr. Campbell of the Baptist church. The deceased was one of the popular and promising young men of Americus, hwere he was born and reared. He was only 22 years of age. He was a son of D. C. Burkhalter and a nephew of Bloom Brown, well known in Savannah. The news comes from every part of this county and section that the late severe weather has not permanently injured the oat crop. All blades above ground were killed, but the fields are again green with new growth. Tax Collector, J. B. Dunn yesterday bought a desirable home on Jackson street, near the public school building, and will move to it at an early date. Judge Fish has held up his decision in the application for bail made by the Hinkles. He will probably render it Tuesday or Wednesday. Mose Phillips is a Negro boy who claims to have witnessed the killing. He gave an affidavit to the prosecuting attorneys, which is said to be very damaging to the defense. When it was read before Judge Fish in the hearing for bail the defense produced an affidavit from Mose also, which was equally strong for the defense. Mose was arrested, bond of $500.00 furnished by the friends of the prosecution, who c;aimed that the last affidavit was obtained by methods of indirection. The public was carefully excluded from the hearing before Judge Fish, but the consensus of opinion of disinterested lawyers, who heard the case, is that the showing made was so fully rebutted that Judge Fish will hardly feel justified in granting bail.
