Washington City, District of Columbia Thursday, July 22, 1886 COL. JACK BROWN'S STATEMENT. Washington (812 New Jersey avenue), July 21, 1886.-- Editor National Republican: Referring to the article headed "Obtaining Money by Fraud", that appeared in the Republican this morning, I submit that, while the statement in question is substantially true, yet I deny, with emphasis, that this information was given by me to that or any other newspaper; and as my name has been connected with that of PETER LAMAR, I further submit that an explanation is necessary. LAMAR, Judge Crisp, and I are from the same town, and the judge will corroborate me in the assertion that up to eight or nine years ago (ca 1877-1878), when the former left for California, no young man was in better standing, morally and intellectually, in Americus, Ga, than PETER LAMAR. He was thoroughly educated, of an excellent family, and held, and had been admitted to practice law after undergoing a searching and rigid examination, and when I met him in Washington last April, after an absence of many years in foreign lands, I found in him a man in the full bloom of manhood, possessing a splendid physique, a fine address and cultivated mind, with his early training embellished by extensive travel. Having never heard anything against his character for honesty and integrity, it was but natural that I should take him cordially by the hand and introduce him to my friends. Alas! My eyes were opened on last Saturday, when Mr. Bond was discharged from the asylum, as to Peter's demoralization since his departure from his native heath, eight years ago. It seems that extensive travel has not only embellished his high native intellect and splendid natural physique, but sharpened his wits and corrupted his morals. However, as the REPUBLICAN says, I met Peter about noon on yesterday by accident, when I told him that Bond had been discharged from the asylum, as "cured" and had told his story. By the first train he left for parts unknown. Through the public press, unassisted by me and without my procurement, the world knows the reasons and particulars of his flight. Simply in vindication of Judge Crisp, myself, and others, who have introduced him to friend and commended him to the kind consideration of appointing powers, I have indicted this short note of explanation. Respectfully, Jack Brown.
