February 17, 1922 FIRST ARREST MADE IN LYNCHING CASE Americus, Ga., Feb. 17. - - Benny DeVane, one of the nine men for whom warrants have been issued in connection with the lynching of Will Jones, a negro farmer, in Schley county Monday, was arrested yesterday afternoon by Sheriff J. E. Battle and is now being held in the county jail at Ellaville. Henry Harvey, another of the men wanted, who was wounded by the negro Sunday night when he went to his house in company with others supposedly to whip the negro, is under guard in his home. The others are missing from the county. Two of them are brothers of Bennie DeVane and one is a brother-in-law. The people of the community are insisting that the lynch- ers be punished. _____________ DEATH OF DR. F. A. THOMAS Americus, GA., Feb. 17. -- Dr. F. A. Thomas, one of the older physicians here, died last night of gastritis. He was 62 years of age and came here from Hall county 31 years ago. He was widely known for his charity work. _____________ JAIL DELIVERY AT AMERICUS Americus, Ga., Feb. 17. -- Five pris- oners, including one charged with mur- der, broke out of the Sumter county jail and escaped Wednesday night shortly after dark, sawing and prying out of the bull pen and then rounding a hole in the masonry about a rear window of the jail room. All were negro's and none were cap- tured Clyde Kemp, another negro mur- derer, was unable to get through the hole cut in the pen bars and was left behind.
