Owens, of Plains of Dura, died last Wednesday noon after an illness of two days. An effort is being made to get a post office established at Hudson, to be called Milton. Ten thousand visitors will be in Americus tournament day, and we are not boasting either. Mrs. R.A. Collier, a former resident of Americus, died in Smithville last Saturday. An old negro woman died in Americus Saturday, who was said to be 106 years old. From all quarters of old Sumter we hear word of commendation in honor of Col. E.G. Simmons for the House of Representatives. Mr. R.E. Cobb, of whom it was reported that he could not live, Sunday, from hemmorhage, is now up and thought to be in much better health than for several months. The Consolidated Mammoth Georgia minstrels gave an entertainment here Monday night, at Glover’s Opera House and then had their property attached for board , drayage and railroad fare. Stanfield is probably the first man in Americus who has had a good meal off of Georgia strawberries. A brakeman on the A.P. & L. road was discharged this week for carrying a bottle of whisky over to Lumpkin, contrary to the rules of the company. Telegrams from Birmingham, Ala. state that Mr. S.H. Black, late of this city, is very low with pneumonia in both lungs, and is in a critical condition. Sumter County Republican The old courthouse should repainted and penciled. An interesting protracted meeting has been going on in East Americus. The public schools will observe Friday April 30th as a holiday. Hon. C.F. Crisp is at home from Washington, much to the delight of his friends. We have been requested to state that there will be a picnic at Pleasant Grove, about ten miles from Americus on Saturday, May 1st. Americus wants a foundry and machine shops. One need of Americus is small manufactories. Charlie Barlow, who recently returned from Colorado, is seriously ill in Hawkinsville. A number of our farmers are planting small patches of broom corn, as an experiment. We are sorry to learn that a little child of Mr. J.L. Mack is seriously ill. An excursion of Atlanta people will visit Lumpkin about the middle of May. The many friends of Miss Belle Black are delighted to see her home again, restored to good health. Misses Leila Davenport and Mary Troutman gave their Sunday School classes a nice picnic over the creek yesterday which was very much enjoyed. Stewart, one of the most prominent men of Sumter County is dead. Mr. P.A. Giles is reported to be in a dying condition. The Sunday School Convention at Andersonville promises a large attendance. The occasion will be one of unusual interest. We hear that farmers are complaining that most of the cotton seed are rotten from having been gathered while wet last fall. Mr. G.C. Cameron, of this city, says he heard the whistle of the steamboat on Flint river, two or three times last Friday, a distance of over twenty miles. The Marion County Patriot, No. 19 Friday, May 7, 1886 Page One Among Our Neighbors Pithy Paragraphs Penned and Scissored from Our Exchanges Sumter County Recorder Some time ago a mad dog bit a tree in Americus which the ladies had been gathering leaves from. Since then the tree has begun to die and the ladies are afraid they will be poisoned by the leaves. The Recorder has been presented with a box of strawberries, each berry averaging four inches in circumference. Mrs. C.W. Hancock and daughters have filed a claim and gave bond to prevent the foreclosure of the Sumter Republican, and the paper will go on as usual. Mr. J.L. Mack’s little baby died Monday. Miss Annie Bell has been very ill since last Sunday. In the 28th district, May 2nd, Mr. Davind Wingete and Miss Sallie Ethridge were married. Judge J.B. Scott officiating. Miss Lula Littlejohn of Cusseta, is visiting her sister and mother at the residence of Mr. J.W. Walters. Representative Hawkes is the best man in our opinion to represent us in the next Senate. Charlie Barlow, who left here for Colorado last fall, died at the residence of his sister, Mrs. D.M. Borum, in Hawkinsville, Sunday morning. The Marion County Patriot, No. 20 Friday, May 14, 1886 Page One Among Our Neighbors Pithy Paragraphs Penned and Scissored from Our Exchanges Sumter County Recorder The rains of last week have improved the oat crop wonderfully and the prospects for a fair yield very good. We understand the county commissioners have been offered $10,000 for the courthouse square. From every direction comes the universal complaint of poor stands of cotton. The seed were all damaged last fall and the prospects for a cotton crop are by no means flattering, in this county. Mrs. E.D. Ansley gave a nice picnic last Friday, in honor of Miss Lou Reed, of Minn., who has been visiting her for several months past. The new tanks for the Southwestern road are being put up. They will have a capacity of 6,000 gallons each, and will be filled from the artesian well by the hydraulic ram. The prospects for a fine fruit crop this year are very promising all through this and adjoining counties. Trees of all kinds are heavily ladened, and as we have passed the frost line, we feel solid. The Marion County Patriot, No. 21 Friday, May 21, 1886 Page One Among Our Neighbors Pithy Paragraphs Penned and Scissored from Our Exchanges Sumter County Recorder Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Harvey Sapp, of Cusseta, and Miss Lula Littlejohn, of this county, were married, Rev. J.W. Jordan, officiating. Last Friday morning a negro cabin was burned up on the Lester place in this county. Everybody in it was consumed. A special train was run from Americus to the tournament at Eufaula. One of our watermelon men says he will have a load in by June 20th. Mrs. J.D. Brown, of the 28th district, died last Sunday. She was the widow of Mr. J.D. Brown, who died a year or so ago. Tom Bivens killed the first snake of the season last Friday. It was found to have fourteen rattles and a button. It was reported here yesterday that Mr. Hitchcock and Bill Hobbs had a bad fight in Hitchcock’s yard in this county last Saturday. Hobbs was pretty badly used up, and two doctors were wit him all day Sunday. In the firemanic contests at Eufaula Wednesday the Mechanics get first prize in first test, $125. The Wide Awakes get second prize in first test, $50, and second prize in second test, $25. The Youngs get first prize in second test, $75 and best time to the engine, $25.
