Her husband, whoe is president of the Americus Kiwanis Club, and who accompied her received only minor injuries. The couple were enroute to Atlanta to attend the football game when the accident occurred. A loose mud chain on one of the front wheels is said to have locked the car causing the accident. Many who saw the damaged car say it was one of the ugliest accidents that has ever occurred in this section and a miracle that both the occupants were not instantly killed. The accident occurred without the slightest warning, Mr. Mathis said and was entirely unavoidable, and while the car was being driven at a moderate speed. The injured were taken to Thomaston to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Julian Hightower, where their wounds were given medical attention and where they remained until Monday when Mrs. Mathis' condition caused her removal to the Wesley Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and where she is still under the care of eminent physicians with some hopes as to her recovery. Mrs. Mathis is the daught of R. L. McMath, president of Americus Oil Company, and one of the most highly esteemed women of Americus, whose friends deeply sympathize with her and her husband in their misfortune.
