F. (Bud) Carter will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday from Hancock Funeral Home. Mr. Carter, who died on Saturday night, at the Sumter Regional Hospital was 58 years old. A native of Colquitt County, Mr. Carter was the son of Steven Alexander Carter and Lonnie Lee Weaver Carter. The well-known Americus businessman was owner of Carter Office Equipment stores in Americus and Montezuma. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Jackson, North Carolina, with the 8th Infantry Division and later was transferred to Mannheim, Germany. His medals included the German Occupation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Carter was a charter member of the Georgia Office Products Association, and a member of both the Mid-South Georgia Office Machine Dealers Association and the National Office Products Association, as well as the Americus Downtown Business Organization. Mr. Carter was a member of Central Baptist Church and past-president of the Americus Optimist Club. He was also active in numerous other Americus and Sumter County organizations, including the Sumter Shrine Club, the Al Sihah Club, the Masonic Lodge #3 F & AM, the York Rite Body of Masonry, the American Legion Post # 2, the Woodmen of the World, the Andersonville Guild and the Plains Historical Society. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. LaVerne Avant Carter, one son, Richard (Rickey)Carter, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joy Carter of Americus, three sisters Mrs. Lena Steele, Mrs. Lucille Johnson and Mrs. Maude Key, all of Lakeland, Florida; and three grandsons, Chad, Harold and Brent Carter all of Americus. Rev. Jerry Shedd will officiate at the chapel service, with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. At the request of the family, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Heart Fund, or to Central Baptist Church. Hancock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
