XV, no. 47, p. 188, 1st col. Issue of April 23, 1852 "Died, in Americus, Ga., March 1st, Mrs. Rebecca Jane Hodges, wife of Rev. Robert J. Hodges, and daughter of Smith Davenport, in the 29th year of her age. She was born in Jasper co., Ga., but was mostly brought up in Houston. She was given to God in baptism in infancy, and when twelve years old she joined the M. E. Church. About the same time she found peace with God, and remained until death a worthy member of the Church. In Oct. 1839, she was married to her present bereaved husband who at that time was irreligious; but she maintained her christian integrity, and exhibited to him by her walk that she had been with Christ, which doubtless was one cause of his being persuaded to be a Christian. During the last twelve months of her life, her growth in grace was perceptible; and she was still striving for higher attainments in religion, when God, in his providence, removed her hence. It may truly be said that she loved God and his people. Nothing seemed to give her more pleasure than to administer to the wants of the ministers of God's word. She was a good neighbor, an affectionate wife, a fond mother, and kind mistress. During her last illness, she suffered excruciatingly, yet she bore it all with Christian fortitude. We frequently during her illness spoke to her about her preparation for death, and she invariably assured us that she was not afraid to die; yet expressed a desire to live for the sake of her husband, children, servants and friends, but God saw best to take her from time. She has left a husband three interesting little daughters, two of whom are members of the Church, and the youngest (little Henrietta) is only waiting to get old enough to join, and many relatives and friends to mourn her loss. J.W.T." Additional Comments: Rebecca Jane Davenport Hodges was the daughter of Smith and Frances Benson Davenport.
