Ella Wright, another niece who was with him at the time saved her life by climbing onto the top of the buggy and remaining there until rescued by Roy Crabb, of Americus, who was assisted in this work by Rees Horne, also of this city. Joseph Perkins and Hollis Fort, prominent citizens here, witnessed the rescue of the little girl, securing the rope with which she was brought ashore. Just before Perkins, who was accompanied by Mrs. Perkins, and three children, reached the bridge site their attention was attracted by cries from the river and they looked out into the stream to see Ella Wright clinging to the top of the buggy and in momentary danger of being washed into the treacherous and swollen stream.
