   MR. M. A. M'CREA
AMERICUS, GA., Jan 1-- M. A. McCrea, one of the few remaining
Confederate veterans in Sumter county, died Monday night at 
his home in the Seventeenth district, near Plains, in this 
county. He was 87 years of age and death ended an illness
of only a few days. Captain McCrea, as he was called among
his friends, had been in good health until a short time
before he died. He was a member of Cutts' famous artillery
battalion during the War Between the States and served
throughout that conflict with honor as a Confederate soldier.
   After the close of the war he returned to his home in
Georgia and resumed the occupation of a farmer, in which he
remained until forced to retire by the grown infirmities of
old age. He was a Mason and a member of Rylander Methodist
church during many years.
   Besides his widow, Mrs. Della McCrea, he is survived by
seven sons, T. H. McCrea, of Atlanta; J. A. McCrea, L. A.
McCrea, B. B. McCrea, C. A. McCrea and M. A. McCrea, Jr.
of Sumter county, and A. F. McCrea of Leland, Miss., and
two daughters, Mrs. J. F. Nicholson and Mrs. H. A. Salter,
both of whom reside in the same community where Captain
McCrea died.
