These transcriptions are from newspaper clippings found in the old scrapbook 
of my great-grandmother Mahala HOLMES NASH (1860-1938), of Statham, Barrow Co, 
GA. Last names have been capitalized, but no other editing was done. The 
clippings did not have a date on them. The second one appears to be from the 
Ellaville, Schley Co, GA. newspaper. Based on content, A. M. CASKEY’s death 
seems to have occurred in October, 1926. 

A. M. CASKEY Dies
Ten-Day Illness Fatal to Confederate Veteran
--
ELLAVILLE, Ga., Oct. 27 – A. M. CASKEY, pioneer citizen and Confederate 
veteran, died at his home here Monday morning after an illness of ten days.

“He was born on Feb. 26, 1842 and was 84 years of age. He had lived all of his 
life in Schley County with the exception of the two years he spent in the War 
Between the States. He did valiant service under General COLQUITT, patrolling 
the Georgia and Florida coasts. Returning home from the war, he again resumed 
his extensive farm operations in Schley County. Moving to Ellaville to make 
his home in 1899.

“Mr. CASKEY was a Mason in high standing and a staunch member of the Baptist 
Church.

“Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Baptist Church, Rev. J. 
W. SNELSON, assisted by Rev. H. H. HEISLER, conducting the services. His 
remains were interred in the local cemetery with Masonic services.

“He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. John WALL, and one grand son, Marion 
WALL, besides a number of nieces and nephews.”

Judge A. M. CASKEY Called Home

“Again the grim messenger of death has entered our midst and took from his 
earth y pilgrimage, Judge A. M. CASKEY, who for so many, many years walked 
among us. Always genial, cheerful and pleasant, it was a joy to clasp his hand 
and exchange greetings with him.

“In many ways Judge CASKEY was a most remarkable man. The good Lord blessed 
him with health prosperity and happiness. In his younger days by frugal habits 
he laid by a competency that sustained him when hoary age crowned his temples 
and he no longer possessed the strength to work.

“Living comfortably with his only child, he went down to his grave surrounded 
by all that makes life happy.

“Judge CASKEY was 84 years and 8 months old. He had lived all of his long and 
useful life in Schley county, coming to Ellaville to reside about 30 years 
ago. He was a member of the Baptist church and of the Masonic lodge here. 
Judge CASKEY was one of the few Confederate veterans in the county. Truly, 
their ranks are being thinned out! Soon we will only have their memories to 
revere.

“Funeral services for Judge CASKEY were held Tuesday afternoon at the Baptist 
church and were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. W. SNELSON assisted by Rev. 
H. H. HEISLER. A wealth of flowers covered his casket and a large concourse of 
sorrowing friends and relatives paid a last tribute to he who for so many 
years had dwelt among us. His remains were interred in the local cemetery with 
the Masonic ceremony. He is survived by an only daughter, Mrs. John WALL, one 
grandson, Mr. Marion WALL, and a large number of nieces and nephews.”
