Hannah Author: Bradford Willis By Bradford Willis Elizabeth Smith Andrews (July 5, 1797 - June 30, 1873) was the sister of Charles Lee Smith, Sr., a pioneer of Talbot County, Georgia. They were the children of Larkin Smith, Sr. (March 6, 1760 - October 20, 1834) and Avey/Ava Bradley Smith (April 6, 1767 - October 10, 1807). Their father, Larkin Smith, Sr., was a veteran of the American Revolution and has a memorial VA marker at the Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery. Elizabeth Smith Andrews was the wife of William Gaines Andrews, and they are buried in the Andrews Chapel Cemetery of Upson County, Georgia. In 1930, Carolyn Walker Nottingham and Evelyn Hannah published the History of Upson County, Georgia. They included a section on old families of Upson County. The following is a small portion of their history of the Andrews family: "Dr. Mark Andrews was born in Essex County, Virginia, about 1725 [July 2, 1724] and died in Cumberland County of that state November 12, 1775 [January 20, 1775]. He married in 1746 Ava Garnett [July 9, 1731 - October 29, 1768], daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Garnett. She died about 1770. The following children were named in his will: Jesse, John, Mary, William, Hannah, Garnett, Susanna, Wiatt and Ann. William Andrews, son of Mark and Ava G. Andrews was born about 1753 and married Mary Gaines. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, was wounded at the battle of Brandywine in 1777. The pension records show that he was a sergeant and was allowed a pension in Virginia under the act of 1785. He moved to Oglethorpe County, Georgia, where he died May 3, 1821. His will probated 1821, names children William G., Elizabeth G. Noel, Ave Andrews and Nancy Andrews, also a nephew Anthony G. Smith. In 1788 the family of Wm. Andrews, together with a colony of people from Cumberland County, Virginia - including the Arnolds, Hargroves, Colquitts, Smiths, Englands and many others came into Oglethorpe County, Georgia. They settled in a vicinity later identified by the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church which they built in 1820 and of which they were charter members. William G. Andrews, born July 13, 1796, in Westmoreland County, Virginia, married Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Larkin and Ava Bradley Smith, Dec. 4, 1816. He died in Upson County, March 15, 1875, and is buried at the old Andrews family cemetery. Their children were James, Caroline, William Capers, Ava Maria and Katherine Frances (twins), Thomas G., Mary Elizabeth, Robert L. and Louisiana Virginia. All of his sons fought in the War Between the States, but Wm. Andrews was too old for active service. He had drawn land in the 561st District of Upson in 1827. He later acquired large tracts of land and was an extensive planter. He also owned an interest in Rogers Factory, located three miles west of Thomaston, owned and operated what is now known as Wilmot's Mill, in the southeastern part of the County, and a mill near his home known as "The Little Mill." He represented Upson County in the General Assembly in 1847-49-50. In 1837 his name appears as a trustee of the Old Upson Camp Ground where he owned a tent. He was a loyal member of the Methodist church as long as he lived." The writer wishes to express his appreciation to Mr. Claude C. Burgess of the Thomaston-Upson Archives for traveling to the Andrews Chapel Cemetery and taking these photographs of their grave markers on September 5, 2013.
