Dupree was born, Feb. 2, 1805 in Talbot Co. Ga. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 , in Fla. and was dismissed in 1865, due to serious wounds , to the upper left shoulder, and to the left lung, he also suffered a broken right leg . The wounds were caused by gunshots and one deep stab wound. He moved to Texas in 1864 and owned a Blacksmith Shop and Livery Stable, in Bell Co. { Belton, Tx.} He also owned a home on N. Wall St. in belton,Tx. He also owned several pieces of land around Bell Co. Herod states in the records, that he was going back to the state of Ga. to choose himself a wife. He had a close friend in Ga. that he served in the war with, named C.L. Peacock who did testify on Herod's behalf at a hearing for a Confederate Pension appl. they both served in the Battle of Chickamuga and Herod states, he lay wounded underneath a tree for nearly a month, with very little medical care, but finally was able to travel and he was moved to Marietta, Ga. He heard that the Army had already told his Father and Mother, that he was missing in action and most surly dead. The Dr. in Marietta told him that he would not live , due to his serious wounds, but Herod lived to see his parents and slowly began to mend. These notes are taken from a {personal} handwritten letter by himself.Herod fought to recover and remain in the Army, but was discharged with honor in 1864. There are no more Army records after that year. All his Military records are on file in Washington D.C. and in the Tx. Archives. Herod did go to Ga. and found himself a wife, but there had been no courtship. He had told several friends in Bell co. that a friend in Ga. had a young lady that he might ask to marry . Her name was Ella Dayton Cook, real age { unknown}, due to her parents dying and she was cared for by some distant kinfolks. She states that she was at least 24 yrs.old at that time. They were married in Ga. and Herod brought her back to Belton, Tx. Herod did at last recieve his Confederate Pension in 1906. They had sons, Willie and Joe Dupree and daughters, Amanda Ophelia , Fannie Lee, and Sally Dupree. One infant died at birth. In 1920 , Herod fell ill and was not able to meet his needs, he was then placed in The Belton Poor Farm and lived there only one day. He died Nov. 29, 1920 and is buried in the North Belton Cemetery, with his wife, Ella , Daughter, Amanda and infant child. Cause of death was Cancer.He also had joined the Masonic Order in Ga. and in the Salado, Tx. chapter, but was dis missed, due to non-pymt. of dues, as he had truly falled upon hard times. Ella continued to live at the old home place in Belton, she died at The Confederate Home for Women, in Austin, Tx. on March 18, 1936. She had also been approved for the widow's pension. The daughter, Amanda O. Dupree , continued to live and maintain the old home , until 1962. She died March 1, 1969, of cancer. The daughter, Fannie Lee, died in 1985,and the two sons, had moved and where not heard from after Herod died.
