Celeste Pitts born & ex-slave of Talbot Co., Georgia interview 
Place of Birth: Jesse Carter Plantation, in Talbot County, near Talbottom, Georgia
Date of Birth: Born in the year 1852
Present Residence: Columbus, Georgia
Interviewed: August 6, 1936

As a girl, Celeste Pitts, nee Celeste Carter, belonged to
one of the most prominent planters of Talbot County,
Georgia.

Her mother was a Maryland Negress, who was sold in Georgia
in about 1849. Her father was a native of Talbot County.

"Aunt Celeste" has only the pleasantest memories of slavery
times. She asserts, unequivocally, that the mass of the
slaves were happy, contented, well fed, well housed, and
humanely treated.

Like her neighbor, "Aunt Cilla" Albright, she is of the
opinion that the world has drifted, and is daily drifting
deeper, into a terrible state of wickedness. Indeed, the
devil is loose upon the face of the earth, corrupting the
whites and blacks, and she "jes doan know whut to think of
it all - no how!"

Celeste Pitts is a typical representative of that type of
Negro between whom and the white race there exists, and will
always exist, a perfect understanding and a bond of mutual
respect.

That she, early in life, came under the influence of humane,
genteel, cultured whites, is reflected by her speech,
mannerisms, philosophy and deportment and, naturally, her
orthodox learnings, due to early environment and training,
find expression in her sentiments - as quoted.
