Ellison is buried beside Miss S.E. Ellison (Sarah Elizabeth, daughter of James Ellison.) According to family tradition, they were very much in love, but could not marry because they were double first cousins. (Erath, p.76.) John Ellison, along with his younger brother James, was a charter member of Sardis Church and built the church. Ellison, Elizabeth D Patterson 13AU1793 19JE1875 Born near Londonderry, Ireland p.59. "..After the death of his [John's] first wife, he married Elizabeth Patterson (Aug 13, 1793-June 19 1875), and by 1830, he and James Ellison had sold their land and moved to the Flint Hill section of Talbot Valley, Georgia. The name "Flint Hill" was carried from the Longtown area where John Ellison's South Carolina plantation was located. The Ellisons were early settlers in this part of the state, and having moved into an undevelpoed frontier area, the two brothers promptly began organizing and building a church. Although the Ellisons of South Carolina were Presbyterian, and John had served as a trustee of the First Presbyterian Church (formerly Scots Presbyterian) of Charleston, they are found to be Methodists in Georgia, and this switch to Methodism had evidently occurred before they left South Carolina. On p. 60, she writes, "John Ellison lived in Talbot Valley until his death at eighty-six years of age. He had twelve children who lived to maturity, and was said to be a 'noble specimen of a grand old man'." On p. 92, she has: "In the Flint Hill District of Talbot Valley, not far from the present town of Shiloh, the two brothers built large sturdy homes with the little church (see Sardis Methodist Church) halfway between them, just two miles from each home. The James Ellison home was a two story house with a porch going all across the front, and the kitchen and dining room built on to the house in an L shape. In the front yard there were three huge oaks and a flower garden. The old home was called "Boscobel", a name famous in England for the "Royal Oak" in which Charles II hid for a whole day, successfully escaping the armies of Cromwell. The name, therefore, carries the connotation of security and peaceful retreat. ...When a pulp wood company purchased land in this area, the old homes were torn down." Here's what Mrs. Erath's book has on James Ellison: James Ellison, b. 1 Jun 1788, d. 1 Jul 1869, m. 29 Oct 1812, Jane A. Patterson, b. 9 Jun 1795 in Ireland, d. 30 Jun 1874. Their children were: 1.
