Alternate spellings of the last name include Lockheart, Lockhard and Lockart. I believe that Barron could be the child listed as "Thomas Lockhart age 8" in Warren Newell's home on the 1850 Census. He is listed in the Newell house on the 1860 census, age 19, as a clerk. Also listed is Pauline A Lockhart, age 21, who could be "Josephine Lockhart, age 12" on the 1850 Census. Lucinda Lockhart of the 1850 Census, age 10, is not listed, but she could have married by age 20. Ceylon B Lockhart, female age 17, is listed in 1860, and there is no 7 year old female on the 1850 census.2 Barron was born at GA on 18 Nov 1842; Byron was probably born in Talbotton, where he enlisted into the Confederate Army, and where Warren Newell resided for the 1850 and 1860 Census.3,4,5 Barron A Lockhart was listed as a household member living with Warren S Newell on the 1860 Census at Talbot Co., GA. A note on the 1860 census says Warren Newell is the Steward of the Collingsworth Institution. This was a prestigious school for boys in its time.6 Barron reported for active duty at Talbot Co., GA, on 26 Apr 1861. He served in Company A, 4th Regiment, Georgia 4th Volunteer Infantry.7 He ended his military service on 12 Mar 1865 at Boulware's's & Cox's Wharves, James River, Goochland Co., VA; Union prisoner of war records show that B A Lockhart was captured at Spottsylvania C H Virginia May 10 1864; and he was paroled at Fort Delaware, Delaware in Feb 1865. He was received at Boulware's's & Cox's Wharves, James River, Virginia on or about March 12, 1865.8 Barron A Lockhart moved in 1866 to TX. B A States in his pension application that he moved to Texas in the Spring of 1876. This conflicts with the 1870 census entry in Falls Co. Since this application was typed, I suspect that this is a typo, and should be 1866.9 Barron was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census on 29 Mar 1870 at Pct 5, Carolina P.O., Falls Co., TX. Pauline A Lockhart and Louise? Lockhart were listed as household members.10 Barron was listed as a hired hand, working for William J Hanley, on the 1880 Census at Pct 7, Erath Co., TX.11 Barron A Lockhart has not been found on the 1900 census. However, a witness statement by Jno. H Taylor dated 23 Oct, 1914, on B A's pension application, stated that he had seen BA in Stevensville, TX about twenty five years or thirty ago, and in Brownwood, TX about fifteen years ago. This indicates that B A Moved to Brown County about 1900.12 He has not been found on the 1910 census. Barron A Lockhart was listed as the head of a household on the 1920 census recorded 17 Jan 1920 Pct 5, Brown Co., TX, living alone. The official date of this census was 1 Jan 1920. Listed as single age 78, cook in restaurant.13 Barron A Lockhart was listed as a border in the home of H Turner on the 1930 Census recorded 7 Apr 1930 at Pct 8, Cross Cut, Brown Co., TX. The official date of this census was 1 Apr 1930.14 Barron A Lockhart died on 9 Apr 1934 at The Texas Confederate Home, Austin, Travis Co., TX, at age 91.15 Barron A Lockhart was buried on Tue. 10 Apr 1934 at Texas State Cemetery, Austin, Travis Co., TX.16 Endnotes 1.
