Brad Willis 1978 Information from Anthony George Smith about Elizabeth M. Smith's family of Talbot & Upson Co, GA. [Notes added 2012 by T. Bradford Willis] To the Best of my Knowledge: My fathers mother was Elizabeth M. (Mary) Smith, who lived on the west side of Flint River. She had two sisters, Aunt Jinnie and Aunt Laura who died old maids. [Additional Notes: Elizabeth Mary/Murphy Smith Smith was born June 21, 1823 in Box Springs, Talbot County, Georgia, the daughter Charles Lee Smith, Sr. (February 10, 1795 - December 1877) a War of 1812 veteran, and Martha T. Glenn Smith (June 1801-September 6, 1878.) She married Anthony Garnett Smith, Jr. on May 14, 1848 in Upson County, Georgia. She died February 27, 1902 and was buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Thomaston, Georgia next to her husband] [Additional Notes: Virginia "Jennie" Smith was born ca. 1839 in Georgia, the daughter of Charles Lee Smith, Sr. and Martha T. Glenn Smith. Virginia Smith joined the Collinsworth Methodist Church in September 1859. According to family tradition, Miss Jennie Smith continued to live in the Charles Lee Smith, Sr. plantation house with her sister, Miss Laura Smith, after the deaths of their parents. It is believed that she died between 1910 and 1920 in Georgia.] [Additional Notes: Laura Smith was born ca. 1844 in Georgia, the daughter of Charles Lee Smith, Sr. and Martha T. Glenn Smith. She joined the Collinsworth Methodist Church in 1863. According to family tradition, Miss Laura Smith continued to live in the Charles Lee Smith, Sr. plantation house with her sister, Miss Virginia "Jennie" Smith, after the deaths of their parents. It is believed Laura died on July 13, 1934 in Talbot County]They [Jennie and Laura] live in the old [Charles Lee Smith, Sr.] Smith Homestead and in later years, Aunt Jennie. Asbury [Fletcher] Smith [a brother] married Jane Butler [1838-1909.] [Additional Notes: Asbury Fletcher Smith, a planter, was born on March 23, 1825 and, I believe, died during the Civil War] One son Frank went to Texas never married Died Texas had never come back Home Charlie Lee [Charles Lee Smith, Jr.] married Ida Butler [last/maiden name correct?] They had One girl Ida Lee [.......?] [Additional notes:Charles Lee Smith, Jr. was born May 23, 1845, the son of Charles Lee Smith, Sr. and Martha T. Glenn Smith. He died August 1, 1915. According to a Smith Bible, Charles Lee Smith, Jr. of Talbot County, GA and Ida Josephine Smith of Augusta, GA were married on November 13, 1873 by Rev. James E. Evans. Ida Josephine Smith of Augusta, GA was born August 19, 1849, the eldest daughter of W. B. Smith and Harriet Smith. Ida J. Smith died November 24, 1878. Charles Lee Smith, Jr. of Talbot County, GA and Mattie A. Matthews were married on January 13, 1881 by Rev. R. J. Willingham. Mattie A. Matthews was born January 21, 1858 in Stewart County, GA, the eldest of Charles Henry Matthews and Frances Adeline Green Matthews (1828-1911) of Talbot County, GA. Mattie Matthews Smith died July 28, 1937. One reference notes that Charles Lee Smith, Jr. was a member of Company D of the 2nd Georgia Infantry during the Civil War] Charles Lee Smith Jr & Jennie Smith and Laura Smith were buried in a [Charles Lee Smith, Sr.] cemetery back of the house. (back) [On the back of the first page, this was written:]In later years Aunt Jennie's mind began to fail & she slipped away from the house at night & was found some 3 miles distance. There she had walked with her little dog, Hood. Aunt Laura then was moved into Talbotton with her niece Mrs. Ida Lee Leonard & passed away there & is buried by her sister. Asbury [Fletcher] Smith married Jane Butler, had one son, Frank, who went to Dallas Texas. Never came home again --died an old bachelor. [second page:]Miss Florence[?] Glenn Smith lives in Bainbridge, GA. Charles was killed by a passer-by near his home in Reynolds. They had one child, a daughter, Mareola ??? Born Sept 1894 Married F. Courtenoy[?] Lewis of Thomaston. She still lives in her home there. Charlie Lee Smith [Jr.] married 2nd Martha Ann ["Mattie] Matthews. They had 2 daughters, Frances and Florence Glenn. Frances married Ferdinand Augustine Ricks of Reynolds, a successful cotton farmer. Children: Charles, James & Frances, Augustine Married Oscar H. Thompson of Thompson, Boland & Lee shoe merchants in Atlanta, GA. Children: Roy Armstrong, Oscar Thompson, Glenn, Nancy, Jack, Jean, Patricia Anthony- This is the nearest complete Record I know A. Geo.
