Author: T. Bradford Willis, DDS Charles Lee Smith, Jr. and his family were pioneers of Talbot County. He was born May 23, 1845 in Georgia, and he was the son of Charles Lee Smith, Sr. and Martha T. Glenn Smith. Several articles about his parents, the Smith plantation home, and the Charles Lee Smith, Sr. family cemetery in Talbot County have been published in the past year in the Talbotton New Era. According to a Smith family Bible, Charles Lee Smith, Jr. and Ida Josephine Smith of Augusta, Georgia were married on November 13, 1873 by the Rev. James E. Evans. Ida Josephine Smith was born August 19, 1849, the eldest daughter of W. B. Smith and Harriet Smith. Ida J. Smith died November 24, 1878. After the death of his first wife, Charles Lee Smith, Jr. and Martha "Mattie" Ann Matthews were married on January 13, 1881 by the Rev. R. J. Willingham. Mattie Ann Matthews was born January 21, 1858 in Stewart County, Georgia, and she was the eldest of Charles Henry Matthews and Frances Adeline Green Matthews (1828-1911) of Talbot County. Mattie Ann Matthews Smith died July 28, 1937. Charles Lee Smith, Jr. and his family lived in what is now known as the Grace- Smith-Freeman house at Ypsilanti. A veteran of the Civil War, Charles Lee Smith, Jr. was a member of Company D of the 2nd Georgia Infantry, C.S.A. This pioneer of Talbot County passed away on August 1, 1915 in Talbotton. Smith and Harriet Smith of Augusta, wife of Charles Lee Smith, Jr. of Talbot Co, Ga. (Buried in Collinsworth Church Cemetery in Talbot County, Ga.) Died Aug 1, 1915, Charles Lee Smith, Jr., the youngest son of Charles Lee Smith Sr. and Martha T. Glenn Smith, all of Talbot County. (Buried in Collinsworth Church Cemetery in Talbot County.) Charles Henry Matthews born in Upson County Aug 9, 1828. Charles Henry Matthews married Frances Adeline Green Jan 29, 1854 at the bride's home in Talbot County. Charles Henry Matthews died April 8, 1900 in Talbot County. (Buried in Collinsworth Church Cemetery in Talbot County, Ga.) Frances Adeline Green born in Wilkes County, Ga., April 8, 1828. Frances Adeline Green Matthews died in Talbot County July 21, 1911. (Buried in Collinsworth Church Cemetery in Talbot County.)
