Margaret George Hardwick (not sure if her maiden name was George or Hardwick - she was b. 1758 VA and d. 1843 Talbot Co. GA and her grave is behind the Towns-Persons-Page house in Talbotton.) I found the will of John Towns in the Talbot Co. courthouse, however it looks to me as if it says "I John Towns of Troup County". The will was written in 1829. Upon John's death, there are sections added to this will that look like a Samuel Jacobs of Heard Co. swears he saw John Towns sign this will; another section where son G.W.B.Towns (of Heard Co. also at this time?) swears that this is the will of John Towns and that he is the executor; other sections of legal speak happening in Heard Co. which I can't quite make out or understand and finally a section where it talks about John Towns having resided in Talbot County and that the [settling of the??]estate of John Towns is to be removed from Heard County to Talbot County. All of this was in 1832 except the final section in 1833. John and Margaret had the following known children: a.. George W. B. Towns, b. 1801 Wilkes Co. GA d. 1854 Macon GA; Studied law in Montgomery AL, admitted to practice in 1824; m. 1). Margaret Jane Campbell in either 1824 or 1826 and she died 1826 AL; Settled in Talbot Co. GA 1826; Served 2 terms GA House of Rep., 2 terms GA senate; Named in his father's 1829 will as G.W.B. Towns and as George W.B. Towns; Elected to Congress 1835 ; m2. 1837 Mary Winston Jones;Governor of GA 1847-1851; moved to Macon where he died in 1854. George W.B. Towns was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon. George and 2nd wife Mary had five daughters and two sons. Of those 7 children, all I have are 6: Harriet Winston, Margaret, Mary, Anna, John, and George W. Jr. The widow Mary Winston Jones Towns died abt. 1879. b.. John G.C. Towns. Named in his father's 1829 will as John G. Towns. I don't know any more about him. c.. Martin Towns. Named in his father's 1829 will as Martin Towns. I also found the will of Martin Towns in the Talbot Co. courthouse. It was written 1835 in Talbot Co. and he leaves everything to the hands of his brother and executor George W. B. Towns. He does not name a wife or children, so I can only assume that he was probably not married in 1835. I don't know any more about him. d.. Leonora Towns. She was not named in her father's 1829 will which may indicate that she had not yet been born when the will was written? I met a person online who had her name as Leonoly. e.. Nancy G. Towns. b. abt 1795. Named in her father's 1829 will as Nancy Gullett. As I have written to the group before on her, I'll just say here that she is my ancestor with her 2nd of 3 husbands, Dr. George Morris Gullett and they resided and raised their family in Talbot Co. GA. Children: John M.T., Mary Margaret, Benjamin F. (my line), Sarah "Sally", and George M. Nancy G. Towns (Sims)(Gullett)(Gardner) d. 1860 in Lee Co. GA Linda Gullette Hudson gullette@writeme.com
