I have been working on the family tree for over 10 years. There are several spellings of the name Wheless. These date back to the early 1700's maybe the following will help. Wheeless, Wheelis, Wheelus, Wheeles, Wheelas, Whellous, Whelous. I have recently been able to start piecing the family together. Still am not sure if all the details are correct. But seems to have began in Virginia. Benjamin Joseph? Wheeless, do not know wifes name. Had 4 sons: Benjamin Wheelis Jr., Lewis Wheeles Sr., Rueben L. Wheelus, Hardy Wheeles. While searching through books at a library in Athens I came across Miles Whellous, Elisha Wheelas. It was not known if they were syblings or cousins. They settled in or around Ogelthorpe County, Georgia. Miles married Ann Griffith, I have found that they had three sons, Pleasant Lafayett, David Manning, and George William. Pleasant Lafayette was my Great Great Grandfather. I visited his grave site many times with my grand father and my father. Which is located in Ogelthorpe County. Miles seemed to have fathered 4 other children with another wife Frances Lumpkin earlier in life under the name of Hardy. I am assuming that his name may have been Miles Hardy or the other way around. And moved to Ogelthorpe County, Ga from Edgecombe County North Carolina. The other childrens names were Archibald, Mildred Frances, Hardy, and Joseph. Pleasant Lafayett born 9-17-1825, married Mary Jane Graham 11-18-1858. Her birth date was 12-16-1839. He died on 1-21-1910 and she on 11-2-1908. They had the following children Fannie, George David, Sara L., James Clinton, Hardy, Susan P., Jonathan Watkins, Joseph, Annie, and Lou Nettie. Fannie married a Tunie Smith, George David married Louisa Beauregard Paul, Sara L. died under school age, James Clinton married Emma Dawson then Lena Smith, Hardy married Viola Womack, Susan P. died very young, Jonathan Watkins married Verggie A. Mathews, Joseph married Ninnie Harris, Annie married Ed Hasty and Lou Nettie married Henry McCannon. The spelling of Wheless seemed to have been adopted by some of the boys from this generation. My Great Grandfather was George David. George David was born 8-9-1859, he married Louisa Beauregard Paul on 1-13-1881. Her birthdate was 5-5-1867. He died 8-17-1911 and she died 4-1-1917. Their children were Mattie Lee married George Bray, Henry Lafayett married Belle Bridges, Howard Lumpkin b. 6-29-1885 d. 7-17-1886, John Warnock b. 1-19-1887 d. 4-10-1918, Annie Louise b. 12-12-1887 d. 11-27-1954, Sallie Ola b. 1-8-1891 d. 1-8-1942, William Cody married Louise Turner, Ella Mae married Carl Turner, Nellie Sue married Carl Harris, Rosa Ethel married Gordon Smith, Joseph David married Gladys Black, and Paul Hoke married Cora ? Joseph David was my Grandfather. Born 4-9-1903 married on 7-4-1920 died 1-10-1963. His wife Gladys Black b. 11-9-1903 d. 7-24-1983. I hope that this will help you in your search.
