Grimes Bertie Co Court Feby Term 1841 This deed from Jas J Ruffin to John Ruffin was proved in open court by the oath of John H. Grimes one of the subscribing witnesses there to & ordered to be registered. Jon J Taylor, Clk Registred April 6th 1841 James J Ruffin was already living in Georgia at this time, in fact had already married Sarah Averett there 1 Oct 1837. So he evidently made the trip back to N.C. since there is no indication that someone did it for him. We are trying to obtain all the other deeds whereby the nieces and nephews sold their land to John. Unfortunately John only lived a few more years after acquiring the land...dying 28 Nov 1844 (per his tombstone) at age 68. He did manage to keep the Ruffin land in tact, and it was passed on to his children: John Thomas, William Julia, and Sally Ann. John's will was posted 11/14/96.
