Letters remaining in the Talbotton Post Office 1832-1833 Talbot County, GA The early newspapers printed the lists of letters remaining as rather a courtesy to their readers and the postmasters. Being a rural society, trips to the postoffice were probably not a daily, weekly or even a monthly event. So the newspapers began to run the lists to alert the addressees there was mail waiting for them. There were probably a few cases where the person to whom they were addressed had died or moved on to another locality, but it appears that most of the letters were probably picked up. There is no other information available on the letters, no record was kept as to who sent them, or if ever received by the addressee, or what became of those not picked up. Also, most of the lists changed 100% each time they were published, perhaps indicating the previous letters had been picked up, and there were persons on the list who regularly received mail, from a variety of people, who used odd and/or phonetic spellings of names. These spellings were retained in the newspaper lists, and in our listing. 1 January 1832 A. F.
