TALBOT COUNTY GA Company A - 4th Regiment File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Volunteers Talbot County Muster Roll COMPANY A, 4TH REGIMENT, GEORGIA VOULNTEER INFANTRY GA - SOUTHERN RIFLES (Originally known as Scott Rifles - see below) This was the FIRST company of volunteer troops from Talbot County to leave for service in the War Between the States. It was organized by Capt Barnard Curley, a tailor by trade and partner of Lazarus Straus. More details available in, including copy of handwritten letter to Gov. Brown: There Was A Land - Robert Jordan - 1971 **Note** Camp Jackson ( also called Camp Dole by some of the 4th boys for Col. Dole ) was the home of the 4th from May 1861 to May 1862. They did not budge from the place until Gen. Benjamine Huger and his division, which included the 4th, were called to Petersburg in May 1982. The 4th men did man the shore batteries at Pig Point and Crany Island. The 4th hospital was located about 2 miles from the Camp itself in the Negro Baptist Church in what is Churchland, Va. The grave yard was directly across the road about 30 yards south of the church. More on that latter. The 4th Georgia Hospital in Richmond, VA. was located in a building on the cornor of Main Street and 21st Street and was known ast "General Hospital #17. Next to it and in the same building was General Hospital # 16, which was the 1st Georgia hospital. Some of the 4th Georgia boys were also in the Clopton Hospital ( named for a Congressman from Alabama, I think ). Clopton Hospital was at the cornor of Franklin Street and 4th Street, facing Franklin Street. cdrtbray@juno.com (Thomas B Ray) Curley, Barnard-Captain April 26, 1861. Retired April 26, 1862. On Monday morning at 10 o'clock the Company assembled in front of the Baptist Church in this place. After a short drill by their accomplished Captain, they were marched up in fron tof the LeVert Female College, where J.H. Weeks, on behalf of the ladied in an address, happy in its conception, elegant in diction and polished in delivery, presented the Company a rich and beautiful banner bearing the inscription, "Scott Rifles" "Presented by the Ladies of Talbotton". Private Augustus Little, received the flag on the part of the Company. Mr. Little's speech was generally applauded and acknowledged by all to have been eminently appropriate to the occasion. After the reception of the flag, the Company fired three rounders, marched back in front of the Hotel-- fired three rounders by section, and then dispersed until two o'clock p.m. At two o'clock the Company met for target shooting, a silver cup to be presented by Lieut Pou to the best shot. The best average shot 4 3/4 inches was made by private H. Hall, distance eighty yards. The Company labored under the great disadvantage of shooting while the sun was shining brilliantly on their pans. At night the young and old, gay and handsome, imaginative and matter of fact, regaled themselves with a "flow of soul" at a "military and civic" party, tastefully and sumptuously prepared by Judge Dennis and lady. Take it all in all, the celebration was one of which our citizens may justly be proud. May the good old patriotic spirit (as the signs of the times seem to indicate) which one prevailed of celebrating the noble and heroic deeds of our great men, and of commemorating the events in our hisotry, which give us character as a nation, be awakened if asleep, if dead resurrected. ============ contributed by Carla Miles The Talbotton New Era Thursday, April 12, 1906 Page Two Personal Items Judge Atkinson of Evergreen, Ala., was in Talbotton for several days last week. He is a prominent attorney of that city and was born and raised near Talbotton. He has written an article, which appears elsewhere in this issue, which will no doubt prove very interesting to New Era readers. *Note - The article written by Judge Atkinson did not appear until the following week in The New Era. This article is interesting and informative as the Judge recalls his youth in Talbotton during the early 1860s and the citizens he fondly remembers. The Talbotton New Era Thursday, April 19, 1906 Page Two (Note: The following was written before the recent visit of Mr. Atkinson to Talbotton) A spirit of garrulity dominates me, and I am in a reminiscent mood. Two pictures are in my mind; one is the home of my boyhood, three miles east, and the other four miles south of Talbotton, Ga. Were I again to visit those scenes, I would find few I once knew. Most of them have gone as voyagers over that sea, upon the crest of the waves a homeward bound sail has never seen. Some perished amid the red glare of battle; others fell asleep surrounded by the weeping ones they loved. It is now April, and how vividly is pictured Friday, the 26th day of that month in 1861, when Capt. B. Curley led from anguished mothers, sisters and friends, the Southern Rifles, the first company to leave home in defense of all our people held dear. Dinner was served at the side of the Methodist church. My father led in fervent prayer, and Judge E.H. Worrill in a patriotic speech. First Augusta, then to Norfolk, and for the first battle array, the Fourth Georgia with Company A on the right, faced a hostile foe at seven pines. Of the more than eighty who left, less than twenty returned, not bearing the trophies of victory, but bronze to a Spartan mother's breast, on as many glory shields. W.D. Atkinson Evergreen, Ala.
