As there will be no service in the other churches next Sunday 11 a.m. I will avail myself of the opportunity, and preach a sermon for the benefit of men. The sermon will not be sensational or vulgar. Every lady, boy, girl can listen. Words unfit for a lady's ear are unfit for a minister's mouth. We extend a cordial invitation to our friends in town and country. The gallery will afford accommodations to our colored folk should they desire to worship with us. The janitor will look after seating them - their entrance and departure. No collection. J.B. McGehee Pastor, Methodist Church The Talbotton New Era Thursday, April 15, 1909 Page Two In The Churches Easter was appropriately observed at the Methodist church. The congregation was large and an appreciative one. The music, under the direction of Mrs. H.F. Wilkerson, was exceptionally beautiful. Mrs. W.J. Thornton, Mrs. W.O. DeLoache and Mr. R.S. Morris added to the vocal charm, while Miss Will Underwood's violin selection was full of rare melody and feeling. The decorations were simple and artistic. Rev. J.B. McGehee, D.D., delivered an earnest, forceful sermon thrilled with the Easter Spirit, and bright the things not seen. Services were held at the Episcopal church. The rector, Rev. Luther Williams, of Ft. Valley was present. His discourse was enjoyed by the congregation. Lillies and blossoms breathed an incense sweet. A generous offering was made. The Epworth League gave an elaborate program. This was prepared by Mrs. Emile Roth and Miss Clara Freeman. A large number of young people contributed to the interest. This was pronounced one of the best entertainments ever given in Talbotton. The Woman's Home Mission Society met with Mrs. J.G. Harrison on Monday. Topics, the young woman at work. Hymn Prayer for the young women of our country - Mrs. A.J. Perryman Bible Lesson - The Christian Paul's Discipline Leaflet - The woman at work and our obligation to her - Mrs. J.A. Bryan Mrs. W.J. McGehee, D.D. and Mr. E.H. Spivey are enthusiastic over Buena Vista's royal hospitality. They were guests of Mrs. Wooten. The lecture by Dr. McGehee was one of the delightful features of the District Conference. Many besieged him to publish it in pamphlet, and guaranteed the sales of a large number of copies. The Talbotton New Era Thursday, July 8, 1909 Page Seven Columbus District Meeting This body met in Buena Vista June 29th and closed Friday night. All things considered the attendance was remarkably good. Under the guiding hand of Rev. T.B. Stanford, Presiding Elder, the business of every session was marked by thoroughness and the broadest brotherly kindness. The citizens of that goodly town manifested great interest in the proceedings and welcomed us to their elegant hospitality. Talbot County was represented by J.B. McGehee, E.H. Spivey, J.B. Parker, J.B. Matthews, W.H. Matthews, Thad Buchanan. Mr. E.H. Spivey served as Chairman of the Committee of Finance. Our esteemed citizen John P. Leonard was elected a delegate to the annual conference. The other delegates are John Fletcher, Columbus; J. Mathews of Reynolds, Williams of Buena Vista. The preaching was done by Dr. Ainsworth, Dr. Anthony, Dr. Malone, Dr. McFerrin and Rev. McGregor. All of it was above average. Dr. Dickey, W.A. Huckabee, J.A. Smith, Prof. Rufus Smith represented important church interests. By appointment Rev. J.B. McGehee delivered a lecture on the Outlook for Methodism. Two gentlemen agreed to take 150 copies if he would publish. Should the churches of the district agree to take from twenty-five to fifty copies the lecture will be given to the public. We pronounce the District Conference a decided success. By a unanimous vote Butler was chosen for our next meeting. Those attending will miss our brother Benns, a Christian gentleman and editor of the Butler Herald. He was a delegate, but died at home on the first day of the conference. J.B. McGehee
