Mrs. M.J. Gibson and Mrs. O.C. Gibson and children, of Phoenix City, Ala., spent a few days last week with their relatives, Mrs. Will Johnston’s family. Miss Daisy Battle, of Baldwinville, was the guest last week of Miss Alsie Pye. Mr. R.L. Persons is spending a few days with friends at Banville, before returning to Mississippi. The Messrs. McBride, who visited the family of Mr. R.F. Patterson for a week, have returned to their home at Louisville, Ga. The Marion County Patriot, No. 30 Friday, August 7, 1908 Page Four Geneva Geneva, Ga., Aug. 4 – Mrs. G.W. Cook and son, Whit McGray, of Buena Vista, spent last week with her sister, Mrs. M.L. Cook. Miss Willie Edge has returned from Seale, where she spent five days with friends and had a delightful time. Miss Elba Covington, who has been in Columbus several days, returned home last week much improved. Her aunt accompanied her home. Mr. Bassett McDaniel, of Rock, Ga., visited his uncle, Mr. A.C. Colquit, this week. Mr. Jack Bardwell and Miss Kate Smith, of Talbotton, on Tuesday of last week. Mrs. Laura Smith and little son, of Bristol, Fla., are visiting her father-in-law’s family, Rev. S. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Jernigan and children, of Buena Vista, were on visit last week for several days at Mrs. Jernigan’s parents, Rev. S. Smith. Mr. G.W. Smith, of Buena Vista, was the guest of his sister-in-law, Mrs. M.L. Cook, for a few days last week. Mrs. Henry Epping, of Columbus, niece of Mrs. Wells, deceased, visited the family of Dr. Brooks last week and witnessed the death of her aunt. Misses Avice and Maud Cook, of Columbus, and Miss Jennie Stension and Bro. Guss, of Talbotton, were guests of Misses Goldie and Gussie Leigh Cook several days last week. Miss Martha Martin, of Columbus, after attending the delightful house party at Mr. Bat Ingram’s on Tuesday night, returned to her home last Thursday. Mr. Sam Baldwin, of the Ledger, the widely known joker with the merriest heart, attended the barbecue last Thursday, and as usual, entertained his many friends and gave receipts for subscriptions. About three hundred people attended the barbecue and all seemed to enjoy the occasion to the full. There was plenty meat, etc., to have fed as many more. Those social occasions bring together friends and neighbors and are profitable to all. Many hearts in our community go out in sympathy for the bereaved family of Dr. Brooks, in the death of Mrs. Brooks’ mother, Mrs. Wells, nee Moffet, which occurred at 6 o’clock on last Tuesday. Her remains were interred at Crawford, Ala., where rests her husband’s body. The remains were accompanied by the family and a few friends from here. Miss Lucile Perry, of Blakely, is the charming guest of her aunt, Mrs. M.F. Perry. Rev. R.M. Boothe preached an interesting sermon Sunday night and left Monday for Quitman to attend Conference. Mrs. G.W. Thomas and children, of Cataula, are the guests of Mrs. Winchester. Miss Susie Candler had as her guests last week Mrs. Brown and her daughter, Miss Clara, from Milner. Mrs. Sallie Jenkins, of Columbus, spent Thanksgiving with Mrs. R.L. McBryde. Messrs. Sterling and Drane Jenkins were also here hunting – for what I cannot say. Miss Goldie, Pauline and Gussie Leigh Cook are in Cusseta attending the wedding of their cousin, Miss Leila McMurrian. Messrs. Roland and Henry Brooks, who are attending school at Auburn, Ala., visited their parents last week. Mr. R.F. Patterson spent several days at Woodland this week. Mr. Johnnie Downs came out from Columbus Wednesday to spend the weekend with home folks. We regret to learn of the illness of Mrs. Hugh Ligon and wish for her a rapid recovery. Mr. James McFarland, of Louisiana, is at the bedside of his mother, who is very sick. We are glad to hear that Mr. Redmond Smith, who has been quite ill with typhoid fever, is some better now. Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Stinson, of Talbotton, visited Mrs. M.L. Cook last week. Mr. Bat Ingram entertained quite a number of his friends on Thanksgiving Day. All report a delightful time. Jenkins’ marriage to Miss Jessie Welch was of much interest to his many friends here. Willie Edd is one of our town boys and we wish for them a long and happy life. Miss Katie Bell Jones is the fond possessor of a Shetland pony and buggy. Mr. R.F. Patterson and family spent a very pleasant day with Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Edge last Thursday. Misses Goldie Cook, Annie Mae McMurrin and Lucy Person left Wednesday afternoon to visit Mr. and Mrs. Will Stinson. They will return Sunday. Mr. Geo. Edge and Mr. Fred Ingram are changing the creek bed at the double bridges near here. Miss Katie Bell Jones who has just returned from Albany where she has been on a visit, reports her aunt, Mrs. Renfroe, in very feeble health. Mr. Hugh Smith, of Talbotton, spent several days here last week. Mrs. Patterson, who lives about one mile from here, showed much nerve last week, when she found she was alone with a tramp coming into the hall. She asked twice who it was, but no answer came. She at once seized the rifle and pointed it directly at him and bade him leave at one, which he promptly obeyed, shutting the door behind him. She says that Providence must have directed her to get the fun, for she had never taken it up before. Misses Ira Johnson and Willie Edge visited Miss May Booth, at Butler, last Saturday and Sunday. Mr. Coon Downs and wife spent several days last week with Mr. John Downs. They returned to their home at Paschal on Tuesday. Jones is at home for a few days. Mr. Ed Edge, from Marion County, visited relatives here Sunday. Mr. Bat Ingram went to Columbus Monday. Mr. A.J. Edge, who has been sick for several days, is able to be up again. Messrs. Redmond Smith and Gus Edge spent Monday in Talbotton. Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Steed attended quarterly meeting here last Sunday. Mrs. Mercer Jones, from Americus, is here again for a day or two. Mr. Scott, from Macon, was here on a visit to Miss Katie Belle Jones this week. Mr. Jim McFarland left for Louisiana last Monday. Miss Mae Willis is in Columbus for several days. Miss Mae Booth, from Butler, is expected this week as the guest of Miss Iva Johnson and Willie Edge. Mr. Brook Benns, from Butler, spent last Sunday with Mr. Harry Benson. Mr. Harper Goodroe, one of Brantley’s enterprising merchants was visiting friends here last Sunday. The Marion County Patriot, No. 17 Friday, May 7, 1909 Page Three Geneva, Ga., May 1 – Miss Katie Bell Jones is at home again after spending a week in Americus. Mr. John J. Jones came home Tuesday complaining a great deal. Trust he will soon be well. Misses Elba and May Covington spent two days this week with their aunt, Mrs. Charles McLendon, at Box Springs. Mr. N. Perry Edge is at home for a short time, much to the delight of friends and homefolks. Mr. E.G. Cook will leave home in a few days to begin working insurance. We wish him much success in his business. Miss Grace Johnston happened to a painful accident in school this week, received a wound by a pair of shears. Mrs. Samuel Webster, of Woodland, and Mr. L.P. Freeman, of Talbotton, visited their sister, Mrs. J.F. Pye this week. Mr. Ledbetter lectured on temperance at the Methodist church last Wednesday night. There was a good attendance. Miss Mary Patterson closed her school here Friday afternoon. She has done some good work and the patrons seem well pleased with her. Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Patterson were called to Woodland last Saturday to attend the burial of the infant son of Mrs. Mahone. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bussey were with homefolks last Sunday and Monday. Mr. Willie Patterson, Misses Alley Pye, Willie Edge and Mary Patterson attended the exhibition at Box Springs Friday night.
