J. Mathews Griggs late congressman of the 2nd District whose vacancy is causing such a great political furor, was a Talbot county boy, born a little south of Prattsburg whose parents moved to Troup county near LaGrange in the fall of 1860. There is no reason to doubt his middle name was given in honor of his physician Dr. W.P. Mathews, who did successful practice in that section of the country. Some of the citizens now living then a small boy remembered distinctly being engaged to move the Griggs family to Troup. They were very poor at that time but later in life met business success which gave young Griggs a fine opportunity in school advantages. It seems the climate of Talbot county is really indigenous to producing able men but does not affect all alike. P.
