Miss Raines graduated from LeVert a few years ago and decided to make teaching her life work. A short time afterwards she began teaching in the public schools of Columbus and did most efficient work there. The attention of the outside world was attracted and last year she was given a scholarship in Columbia University, New York, where she has taken a special course in the manual training department. She returned to Talbotton Saturday only to stay a few days with her parents, Judge and Mrs. W.J. Raines, before going to Knoxville, Tenn., where she has charge of the chair of manual training during the great summer school that meets there. This is an honor well bestowed and the friends of Miss Raines are rejoicing over her rapid promotion and predict for her a still greater career when her talent is better known. The Talbotton New Era Thursday, August 27 1903 Page 6 Miss Julia Raines The many friends of Julia Raines congratulate her on having recently been elected to the chair of Manual Training in the Normal College at Greensboro, N.C. There are over 500 students at the college and 40 teachers. The chair of manual training was created this year for the purpose of securing her as well as for the advancement of the college. Miss Raines will leave Sept. 1, for her new field of labor and will do preliminary work in organizing the department before the college opens about Sept. 15. NOTES from Gerry Hill.
