E. Lee’s Anniversary Fitting tribute was paid to the loved memory of Lee on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. E.L. Bardwell, Mrs. N.P. Carreker, Mrs. N.C. Underwood and Miss Nannie Raines arranged the stage with appropriate decorations. A splendid picture of Lee adorned the center. Around the easels and walls confederate flags and colors waved patriotically; vases of exquisite roses lent a rare fragrance. The music under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Ragland added a charm and enthusiasm. The singing of Dixie by the pupils of LeVert College was inspiring. The speech and reading by Master Robert Leonard and Miss Mary Gullett Smith gave a zest and brightness of youth. Mrs. J.A. Bryan read “Lee at Gettysburg”, a production of Col. O.D. Gorman’s. This poem was selected by the state program committee and was read by many chapters on this anniversary. Col. Gorman with his usual ease and dignity was master of ceremonies. Hon. William H. Brannon, who is known all over the broad land as a prominent Knight of Pythias, and who held all the offices in the order and now holds the highest position that is in rank introduced the orator and proved that with him, “Knighthood is forever” on all occasions. Mr. Brannon is graceful, natural and eloquent. By his refined elegance and courtly manners he is one of whom we may well be proud. Judge Eugene Ray, the orator, is just fine. He is Judge Ray the brilliant, humorous and original. He makes no effort but wins his audience heart and soul. The Alice Beall Mathews Chapter was glad to have Judge Ray as its orator and its honored guest. It was a pleasure to see so many faces of the dear old veterans in the audience.
