Lumsden Revisits Macon Mr. T.R. Lumsden of Talbot County, brother of Mr. B.D. Lumsden and Mrs. Adelle Griffin of Macon, is in the city a guest of his brother and a visitor to the fair, where he is taking a keen interest in the agricultural displays. Being 85 years of age, hale and hearty, and having a pretty thorough knowledge of everything that has taken place in the state for over three score years, his visit to this city recalls to mind several points in history. In 1824 Mr. Lumsden, then a mere child of 4 years, was taken to Milledgeville by his father. During his stay in that city General LaFayette passed through and the senior Lumsden introduced his young son, with whom the distinguished gentleman shook hands. Mr. Lumsden recalls this first visit to the old Georgia Capitol very distinctly. Mr. Lumsden witnessed the meteoric display that is known as the time "when the stars fell." It was on November 13, 1833, in Putnam County, he saw such a display and he described the scene picturesquely. Of it he says: "The entire firmament seemed filled with fallen stars." On November 14, 1865, he witnessed a somewhat similar display from the front porch of his home in Talbot County. "This time the stars seemed to be falling like sparks from the stack of a rapidly moving locomotive" said Mr. Lumsden yesterday. Four years ago he witnessed the wonderful spectacle again. It was on the night of November 15. "This time the display was not near as brilliant as the first two occurences, the stars were less luminous and not as numerous." Mr. Lumsden's first visit to Macon was over sixty years ago. "At that time", he says, "I was on my way to South Georgia on a hunting trip. We looked all over the city during the morning for a supply of provisions and then couldn't find them." - Macon Telegraph This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
