L.J. Downs went to the home of Postmaster Homer Martin to collect rent. During the interview, Mr. Martin became resentful and reached for a gun. Mrs. Martin tried to avert the tragedy and Mr. Downs left with Martin firing at him. Later Marshal Hesters sought Martin at the Post office and was met with a volley. The right thumb was shot off, left wrist injured and a load of shot entered the left arm. Hesters secured the gun before he succumbed. Martin was arrested and is lodged in the county jail. He has a family. Mr. Hesters is confined at home under the care of physicians. He has a wife and three small children.
