Lizzie May Worrill and Ike Hunt were indicted jointly for the murder of Jim Worrill on December 29, 1916 by poisoning him. The state’s theory was that illicit relations existed between deceased’s wife, Lizzie May Worrill and Ike Hunt and that they conspired to kill Jim Worrill. The defendants were tried separately. Lizzie May Worrill was represented by Cols. John A. Smith and A.J. Perryman, Jr. She was found not guilty. Ike Hunt was represented by J.H. McGehee. He was found guilty with recommendation for life imprisonment. A motion for a new trial was made in his case. Charles Ellison was charged with the murder of his brother, Rich Ellison. His plea was the unwritten law and self defense. He was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter. His attorneys, Cols. J.H. McGehee and Brooks Culpepper, made a motion for a new trial. The new officials, Judge G.H. Howard and Solicitor Frank McLaughlin, won unstinted praise in the manner in which they discharged their duties. They won many friends in Talbot County.
