Freeman As the days go swiftly by and the season of Christmas is at hand, there comes to us the sorrowful reminder that the hearthstones of some of our friends will be darkened by the shadow of desolation that in some hearts there is the “sigh” for the touch of a vanished hand, the sound of a voice that is still”. Memory carries me back to the years that are passed, and calls to light the scenes of other days. From earliest recollection Mr. Leonard Freeman was my neighbor. From a child I considered his judgement of men and measures as superior. He was always industrious, always carrying more than his portion of every burden. He was upright and true, while looking “carefully after the ways of his own”. Yet, he had time to minister to the needs of others. Mr. Freeman had a faculty for making friends, and reason he loved people and loved to be with them. He loved the sanctuary and the chimes of the church-going bell always summoned him to the “house of God’s abode.” Disease marked him for its own, and for years he suffered beyond the knowledge of mortal men, but it was A spartan spirit that made life so grand, Mating poor daily needs with high heroic deeds, That wrested interest from Fate’s hard hand.” At last rest came, the rest, no doubt for which his weary pain racked form had yearned so long, and he answered: “Master, Here am I.” His courage, his cheerfulness, his indomitable energy, his life of honest usefulness, devoted to making manhood happier and better, his Christian fortitude are a blessed heritage. Such a life lived in such a way, leaving such a memory is infinitely greater than the diadem of the Caesars.
