Allen was born May the 28th and died at his home in Talbot county, Georgia on April the 16th, 1910. The cause of his death was a gradual failing and weakness brought on by old age. He was remarkable for his industry and success as a farmer and for his genuine sympathy for anyone in need. He was truly a friend to all humanity. He was accommodating and charitable, affable and courteous to all and when he grasped your hand and said, “I am your friend,” you felt secure in the assurance, for with solid integrity he had combined rare strength of character. I speak advisedly, having been his friend and neighbor for over forty years. In his youth, his opportunities for acquiring an education were very limited, as he was an important factor in the support of his father’s family. But he was a remarkably close student of human nature and read the faces of his fellowmen with almost unerring retinency. Some one once said that a college education would have spoiled Horace Greely, for it would have ironed all the individuality out of him. The polishing, too often, takes away the character. Mr. Allen was a true diamond in the rough. He leaves three sons – Messrs. John T., Jim and Joe Allen, and three daughters – Mesdames Wm. Gilbert, Sidney Cook and Tamp Cook. His body was laid to rest beside the wife of his youth in Mathews Chapel Cemetery.
