Bentley from a pistol shot. His brother-in-law, Mr. D.R. Cauthan, had been cleaning the pistol, and to see if it would work was snapping it. One of the chambers was charged and went off, the ball striking Mr. Bentley in the back just under the shoulder blade, passing through the heart and lodging under the skin of the left breast. The coroner’s jury gave a verdict of accidental shooting. Mr. Bentley was 74 years old and was a soldier in the Confederate army. He leaves a son in Alabama, a sister in Columbus, a niece, Mrs. W.R. Worthen, in Buena Vista, and his wife and other relatives to mourn his loss. He was laid to rest in the family burial ground near the home. The Marion County Patriot, No. 34 Friday, September 6, 1907 Page Four Kills Aged Man; Accident Claimed Columbus, Ga., Sept. 3 – News reached the city today of a tragedy in Chattahoochee County Sunday afternoon in which J.I. Bentley, aged seventy years, was shot and killed by a man named Cothan. Only the two were present. Details are not known. Cothan says the killing was accidental.
