He had passed up along the pathway of life from the morning when the dewdrops of hope glisten like diamonds in the sun, along the past the noonday milestone where man is striving with all his might and main to win the prizes of life before the sunset of death ends his journey. He had passed all these stages along the way and had started down the gentle incline toward the grave, where all the shadows point backward when I first knew him. As the shadows in the life of an older person point backward, so does the memory and becoming childlike again in their simplicity and sincerity all their conversations are reminiscent with the things of long ago. That’s why I loved to talk with “Uncle Mit.” He was interesting to me because I learned something by talking with him. But his kind are passing fast away. Those who fought the battles of the sixties are growing fewer every day. Soon the fast re-echoing footstep will be heard as it passes over the dividing line between life and eternity. Most of the persons known to these grand old patriots have already preceded them. It was true of “Uncle Mit’s” friends. Mr. Edwards was born in Talbot county on the 13th day of June, 1843. He served in the Civil War. He was married to Miss Anne Eliza Hall, and to this union was born the following children: Mrs. Isabel Allen, Edgar H., Mary Lilyan, Clarence Brown and Oscar Davis Edwards. These with Mrs. Edwards, still survives him. He has also a living twin brother, Mr. William Edwards of Marion County and Mr. Taylor Edwards of San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Edwards had been in failing health for four years. His condition did not become serious until a few days ago. He passed peacefully into the regions of death at his home in the western part of town on the evening of March 9. He was laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery Friday afternoon at four o’clock. Rev. Graham Forrester conducted the funeral exercises.
