Gorman Dead About a year ago the spirit of William Roscoe Gorman passed over the great divide. Now his wife’s spirit has gone to join him in the regions beyond the grave. Mrs. Gorman, who had been an invalid for some time, passed peacefully away at her home near Paschal Monday night. The funeral was conducted from the Methodist church here by Reverends J.W. Arnold, G.C. Ingram and R.S. Sowell. The music which was unusally sad and sweet was furnished by Mrs. J.H. McGehee, Mrs. W.O. DeLoache, Misses Hattie Simpsom, Birdie May Dunbar and Messrs. R.E. Holmes an C.K. Mahone. Messrs. H.P. McDaniel, E.R. Matthews, L.W. Smith, R.E. Holmes, W.K. Couch and M.A. McCoy acted as pall bearers. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. The Talbotton New Era Thursday, March 9, 1911 Page Two Fulsome praise of a sweet, pure and earnest life like that of Mrs. Gorman would be a sacrilege. Her life was so simple, so honest and free from guilt that it never occurred to anyone to doubt her sincerity in anything. The great secret of the love of her children for her was this sincerity coupled with her unselfish and self sacrificing nature. There was never a mother loved more tenderly and devotedly than she, and never a mother or wife who gave her whole life so undeservedly to her family. But her unselfishness was not confined to home alone. Her heart reached to all those who were needy and suffering and without even saying a word about it she was often known to part with her own material comforts and necessities that others more needy should have them. She was even thoughtful of those round her and even while suffering her last sickness was thinking of others. Only a few days before her death while she was suffering greatly some of her neighbors called to get help for a family who had lost all their household goods by fire. When Mrs. Brown and I had responded to the call for help we returned to the sick room and spoke of the missions of our visitors. From a bed of pain Mrs. Gorman said feebly; “Why didn’t you tell me I want to help them.” On Sunday before her departure on Monday Roscoe came from Columbia to see her and during the day she said to one of her daughters, “Fix a nice little box of things for Roscoe to carry his children.” The morning before her death she put her arms around Mrs. Brown’s neck and kissed her repeatedly saying “I love to kiss you, I love you so much” then she said “Will all the children get here?” Mrs. Brown said “I hope so.” Then she said “If they don’t I want you to tell them to live right and all come home to Heaven.” These little incidents more fully illustrate her character than anything I could say. Is it a wonder that all who knew her loved her and to know her well was to love her much indeed. She grieved a great deal that she couldn’t see more of her children but never said a word that showed impatience toward any of them. I have known here since I was a child and for thirty years have known her intimately. In all that time I have never known her to say or do an unkind or uncharitable thing. Whenever I entered her room, even if she was suffering she greeted me with a smile and a kind word. We miss her greatly yet we feel that she has gone before us to a land where there is no parting or sorrow which came to her when suffering was over we could see that peace which passeth understanding.
