Leonard Takes His Life Act Was Due To A Temporary Spell Of Mental Aberration Mr. Leonard Had Been in Bad Health for Some Years and This Had Caused His Mind to Become Unbalanced – Was Well Known Henry C. Leonard, prominent in the business world, an office of the First Methodist church for many years and one of the most highly respected citizens of Atlanta, committed suicide by shooting himself at his home, 53 Merritts Avenue, yesterday afternoon at two o’clock. Temporary mental aberration caused by a long term of ill health and much suffering is ascribed as the cause of his act by Dr. J. Scott Todd, for many years his physician. About five years ago Mr. Leonard went through a long siege of illness which left effects felt up to the day of his death, and of late he has suffered keenly. No recent death has caused more wide-spread sorrow in the city than the untimely end of Mr. Leonard yesterday. Having been a citizen of Atlanta from early manhood, he was intimately associated with many affairs, and both in his church and social life numbered his friends by hundreds. Great Shock to All Mr. Leonard’s death comes as a great shock to everyone. Although suffering greatly for the past month no one thought his illness had reached such an acute stage as to lead him to take his own life. Yesterday morning nothing strange was noticed in his behavior, and he went about the house as usual. He was not missed when he went into the bathroom and shut the door, and until a few moments later, when the report of a pistol was heard, there was no uneasiness on the part of his family. Mrs. Henry C. Leonard, Jr., his daughter-in-law, was the first to reach him. He was lying on the floor unconscious, and until he died, half an hour later, was never able to speak. Left Brief Note “No use to investigate; my own act,” was the substance of a note he had hastily written and addressed to the coroner, in anticipation of the inquiry which would be necessary after his death. Coroner Donehoo will hold an inquest this morning. The family yesterday were prostrated by the shock. Both sons of the family, Henry and Louis Leonard, well known traveling men, were out of the city, and only Mrs. Leonard, her daughter and two daughters-in-law and a number of small grandchildren were in the house at the time of the tragedy. The two sons were located last night and will reach the city today. Mr. Leonard was born in Talbot County 63 years ago. He removed to Atlanta when quite a young man and at once identified himself with the business life of the city. For several years he was credit man of the Frank E. Block company and later was appointed local manager of the Bradstreet company. When the well known firm of Inman, Smith & Co., wholesale dry goods was organized, he became one of the junior partners. Of late he was connected with the Lumpkin company, wholesale notions and dry goods. Prominent Churchman In a business way he was widely known throughout the state, being an authority on credit matters and the wholesale dry goods field. In his private life he was always identified with works of charity and progress. For sixteen years he had been assistant superintendent of the First Methodist Sunday school, besides holding the office of trustee and steward. He was well known in a social way. Surviving him are his wife, two sons, Messrs. Henry and Louis Leonard, and their wives, and one daughter, Mrs. Robert Troy, who lives on Ashby Street in West End. – Atlanta Constitution File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/talbot/obits/l/leonard12641ob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 4.2 Kb
