Judge Martin Dead

It was only last week that we carried the sad news of the death of Mrs. J.H. 
Martin, and of Judge Martin’s having a stroke of apoplexy.  This week we have 
the news of Judge Martin’s death.  Three days after he was stricken with 
apoplexy he passed peacefully away at the home of his son-in-law, Judge A.W. 
Cowart.  It was like the falling on sleep of a little child at the end of a 
day’s pleasure.  He had finished his lifetime tasks and he fell on a restful 
sleep from which he will never awake in this world.

Judge J.H. Martin was born in Talbot county, December 23, 1847.  He received 
his education in the common schools here.  He married Miss Oslin by whom he 
had four children, Mrs. J.H. McGehee, Mrs. Holmes Frederick, Mrs. A.W. Cowart 
and Mrs. A.D. Brown.  After her death he married Miss Toole, of LaGrange.  
This marriage was blessed with two children, Mrs. W.A. Scarborough and Miss 
Ruth Martin.

Judge Martin represented Talbot county in the legislature, was twice judge of 
the Chattahoochee circuit, and presidential elector on Cleveland’s ticket.  He 
was a self made man.  At the time of his death he was considered one of the 
ablest corporation lawyers in the Chattahoochee circuit.  He had many 
relatives in Talbot county.

He is survived by two brothers, W.H. Martin, Columbus; R. Martin, Ossahatchie; 
and two sisters, Mrs. L.A. Baldwin, Atlanta; and Mrs. I.W. Stephens, Ft. 
Worth, Texas.
