Matthews a winsome son. They called him Jesse Allen for both his grandfathers. Duly, this bonnie boy unfolded new charms and, “The hearts of the home were happy, Love with its blessing smiled; And the world was fair with gladness For the life of a little child.” The months passed and the baby grew into a toddling lad; his prattle the sweetest sound of all glad notes on earth; his smile brighter than the fairest sunbeam. His presence was a joy and benediction to all who knew him, merry and glad, he cheered the heart and banished dull care. In the home of his grandparents, Col. and Mrs. Jesse Jared Bull, he was more welcome than the flowers of spring time. They loved him as their very own and yearned for his coming, sorrowed at parting. Thus he came and went with “Smiles full of gladness Wreathing his face Laughing and lisping in radiant grace.” But – disease laid its hand heavily upon this sweet child and then was shown his crowning quality – endurance; in pain, under all conditions, there was a patience passing all understanding. All that loving ministries could provide, all that money could give, and all that modern science and skill could invent were used to alleviate suffering and make well again the little loved one. After weary months, the angel came one mild summer eve in the calm of a Sabbath twilight, wooing little Jesse into the beautiful garden of sleep. The form of little Jesse was laid to rest in the ancestral plot, where sleep many of his paternal relatives.
