Mellichamp Mr. J.J. Mellichamp, a very highly respected and honored citizen of this place, breathed his last at his late residence in Geneva at 7 o’clock last Friday evening. His death was not unexpected as he had been in failing health for several years. He was born in Florida, but was reared at Columbus, Ga. He learned the drug business at that place at an early age, and was recognized as one of the finest druggists in the state. He moved to Box Springs, Ga., where he engaged in business for several years, and from there to Talbotton, Ga., where he located for a short period. He moved to Geneva over twenty years ago and has since resided here. He built up a good business and a reputation for honesty and integrity that will ever live after him. It has been often remarked and the writer can truly say that he possessed as high and lofty an opinion of honor and integrity as any man he ever knew. He was never married. He leaves two sisters, Miss Rebecca Mellichamp of Geneva, and Miss Cook of South Carolina, besides a host of friends to mourn his loss. These latter were with him as also one of his nephews, Mr. Cook, for some previous to his death and did all that loving hands could do to alleviate the pain and administer to him. He was laid to rest in the Geneva cemetery. The burial service being conducted from the Presbyterian Church of which he was a member, by the Rev. J.L. Smith. His remarks at this service were the most appropriate and impressive I ever heard. The large attendance being deeply touched. In the death of Mr. Mellichamp this community loses a citizen whose place will be hard to fill. H.W.B. The Talbotton New Era Thursday, October 22, 1903 Page 6 Death’s Sad Roll Mr. J.J. Mellichamp Friday night at his home in Geneva Mr. J.J. Mellichamp, a highly respected and honorable citizen of that place, breathed his last after a long and painful illness. Mr. Mellichamp was about 60 years old and had been living in Geneva many years, coming there from South Carolina. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church there and lived a good, consistent life. He leaves two sisters, Miss Rebecca who was living with him when he died, another married sister in South Carolina. Their many friends sympathize with them in their loss. The Talbotton New Era Thursday, October 29, 1903 Page 7 A Card of Thanks I take this opportunity to thank my friends of Geneva for all their great kindness to my brother, Dr. John J. Mellichamp, in his long and painful sickness and death. All showed him marked kindness and sympathy; old and young, men and women, even the children, some of them would come with flowers and milk. The clever physician here Dr. Brooks, was as kind and tender as a brother. Our good Baptist minister, S.T. Smith, stood by us to the last, at his bed, in the pulpit, at the grave. May God’s richest blessings rest on each one through time and eternity. His Sister, Rebecca This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.6 Kb
