Wilson, one of the best known farmers of Talbot County, was the victim of a horrible accident which resulted in his instant death last Friday afternoon. Mr. Wilson was returning to his home at Daviston when the accident occurred. He left Talbotton late in the afternoon driving a four mule team heavily loaded with cotton seed meal and hulls. Mr. Wilson was driving the team and a Negro hand who accompanied him was seated on the rear of the wagon. There is a long hill which goes down to a creek, on the road to Daviston and just beyond the residence of Mr. J.B. McDowell. The road is very narrow at this point and deep ditches are on each side. As Mr. Wilson was driving slowly down this hill one of the front mules became a little frightened and darted out of the road. The movement was so sudden that it caused the rear mule to be pushed into the ditch on the right side by the pole, and the wagon and load tumbled off the embankment. Mr. Wilson was thrown against the opposite side of the gully on his stomach and the wagon and load fell across his back, instantly crushing him to death. The Negro on the rear of the wagon jumped and escaped injury. He was powerless to pull the wagon from the body of Mr. Wilson. It had become so tightly wedged in the gully that the strength of several men had to be secured before it could be lifted. A messenger had to be sent over the neighborhood to get the necessary help and it was several hours before the body was recovered. Mr. Wilson was the postmaster at Daviston, and a man who was prominent and well liked in his community. For many years he was a resident of Talbot County and has many friends here who sincerely regret his unfortunate death. He was a member of the Methodist church at Prattsburg. Mr. Wilson leaves a wife and several children. His oldest son resides in the Indian territory. Note: There is a memoriam for Mr. Wilson on page 6 of the February 25, 1904 issue of the New Era.
