The Talbotton New Era, October 26, 1905 The Talbotton New Era Thursday, October 26, 1905 Page 7 In Memoriam Mrs. Mary Greer Richards was born in Talbot Co., Ga., July 23rd, 1846 and died at her home near Centerville, Talbot Co., Ga., Aug. 8th 1905. In early childhood she joined the M.E. Church and remained a consistent member, until the summons came “It is enough, come up higher.” Her name was enrolled as a member of the Alice Beall Mathews Chapter of the U.D.C., April 28, 1903. Mrs. Richards was a niece of Alexander H. Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy. For several years she attending school in Sparta, Hancock Co., Ga., boarding in the family of her uncle, Judge Leinton Stephens. Mrs. Richards was a gentle, modest, refined Christian woman; unobtrusive and unassuming; yet she had convictions and the courage of them. Like the silent stream that pursues its onward course enriching and refreshing the region through which it flows, so the influence of this serene Christian woman has encouraged many a wayworn in his journey stepping Heavenward. The lowly Nazarene has said: “By their fruits ye shall know them” “None knew her but to love her, nor named her but to praise”. Therefore we feel that we may look up, and amid our tears truthfully say, we believe she is forever with the Lord. In the sudden death of Mrs. Richards the church has lost a useful member. The A.B.M. Chapter, a loyal and patriotic daughter. Her children a devoted and self-sacrificing mother. Her brothers a loving sister, the community a beloved and respected friend. Her life was a blessing. Her words of sympathy and deeds of kindness will be missed by those who knew her best and loved her most. Therefore be it resolved. 1st That in the death of Mrs. Richards the A.B.M. Chapter of the U.D.C. has lost a beloved and loyal member, one whose devotion to this grand cause has been a benediction to others. 2nd That a copy of these resolutions be spread on the minutes of the chapter and another be furnished the New Era, and the family of the deceased.
