Searcy who had many friends and acquaintances in this community. Your committee feeling inadequate to the duty of writing a suitable tribute to one so noble and grand among men as Rev. John S. Searcy, humbly offer the following: In life’s journey we have joys and sorrows, meet with defeats and gain victories, and in memory’s storehouse that are treasured up. One by one dear ones pass over the river of death; some while in youth, others in middle life, and still others in old age; like ripe grain gathered for the Master’s use. Our brother and ex-pastor was one of God’s noblemen, pure and spotless, whose life was an open book before this people, a pillar of strength for those around him, loved and recognized by all as one who did all he could for the glory of God and the welfare of his fellowman. Our lamented brother was born in Ballwin County, Georgia, March 20, 1821, and died in Talbot County, Georgia Monday at 5 o’clock p.m., March 13, 1896, being 75 years, 11 months and 23 days old. In years and in deeds, in thoughts, words and feelings, he filled the measure of life’s years. His loss will be felt by this church and community beyond the power of words to express. Brother Searcy joined Mt. Zion Church the 19th day of November, 1839 and was baptized by Rev. Isaac Deavers, pastor at that time. He was ordained to the ministry the 23rd day of September 1839. He served this church as pastor for over thirty years faithfully and efficiently. Sublime in the simplicity of his faith, unconquerable in his devoted earnestness for the salvation of souls, positive and unswerving in what he knew to be right. Of his connection to this church it is unnecessary to speak. The imprint of his great love and devotion has been made on the hearts of this community for time and eternity. The fruits of his labors, the effects of his prayers can only be known by those who meet him in the haven of his faith. As a token of love for the memory of our dear brother and his bereaved family be it therefore Resolved 1st that to his dearly beloved wife who has proven herself indeed the true helpmeet in his struggle for life and immortality, and to his children who have been by his death deprived of a father’s tender love and care. May God in His tender mercy give them strength to bear this affliction. 2d, That the community has lost a good citizen and every good cause a strong advocate, that the community has been bettered by his life, example and teachings. May we be bettered by remembering his teachings and following his examples. 3d, That in loving remembrance of his noble Christian character, we dedicate this page in our church record and a copy be sent to the family of the deceased.
