W.J. Raines Dead Captain W.J. Raines who has been in a low state of health all the winter passed away quietly at his home on West Church Street Monday about 10:30 o’clock. Captain Raines saw valiant service in the War Between the States. He was badly wounded in the knee during the war. This caused him to be a cripple all the rest of his life. For a long time he was Clerk of the Superior Clerk here. At the time of his death he was Notary Public and ex-officio Justice of the Peace of this district. With his passing we note the thinning of the ranks of those grand old gentlemen of the old south. They believed in the code of Honor. Honor to them was dearer than religion. But their old school is fast passing away. In a few years and no more will their voices be heard among the living. I know not if the world will ever see a nobler race of men than the men of the old south. They would give their lives in the defense of Honor, Woman, and the helpless against the oppressor. They fought for their homes during the war. For this reason they were the best soldiers the world has ever seen. Captain Raines was one of these. He is survived by his children as follows: N.B. Raines, Port Tampa City, Fla., Robin Raines, Dallas, Tex., Mrs. Bessie R. Appling, Miss., Mrs. N.T.C. MacKay, Toronto, Canada, Miss Julia Raines, N.C., and Miss Nannie Raines, Talbotton. The funeral was conducted from the home Tuesday by Rev. J.W. Arnold and Rev. Graham Forrester. He was laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Talbotton New Era Thursday, April 20, 1911 Page Six Local News Mr. N.B. Raines, of Port Tampa, Fla., has spent some time here since the death of his father, Captain W.J. Raines. Dr. C.L.
