Slab has weathered and lettering getting hard to read. "Sacred to the Memory of Masalan M. Melson Born April 12, 1827 Died in Defence of his Country Feb. 16, 1864 next 2 lines can't read." Masalan served in Company I 46th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry C.S.A. He died while home on sick furlough from chronic diarrhoea. Flag was placed on Confederate Memorial Day, April 26, 2004 by Sons of Confederate Veterans, Echols Guards Camp 1711, located in Manchester, GA. I have ordered a V.A. marker for this grave.
