Bird 1810 1858 Etheldred Edwards age 83 1866 Julia Edwards died 1863 in the 59th year of her life consort of Etheldred Edwards John T. Sankey, MD died 1811 in the 45th year of his age [1766-1811] This plot is located on the north side of the road leading from Lyneville toward Daniel Springs about 1/4 mile from the Greene County line. It is about 150 yards from the road on land belonging to Murdell Cooper. NOTES Added: (Shannon Dale Byrd byrdman10@iname.com) Edwards, Ethelred son of Benjamin and Mary Edwards, was born in 1783, in Wilkes County, Georgia. He married Julia Ann Ogletree on December 9, 1823, in Green County, Georgia. Julia was born in 1804, in Wilkes County, Georgia. Bird, Dr. George Lee Dr. George L. Bird was born Christmas Day, in 1810, near Crawfordville, Georgia. George was the eldest son of ten known children born to wealthy plantation owners, Buford Bird, a veteran of the War of 1812, and Mary “Polly” Keeling. Martha Edwards was the second wife of Dr. George Lee Bird. Not only did she raise Dr. Bird’s first son, George Marshall, but she was the mother of Dr. Bird’s latter three children. NOTES: Rhoda Fone One possible explanation for Dr. Sankey being buried here might be that Etheldred Edwards purchased land from Dr. Sankey's heirs and that Dr. Sankey was already buried there. According to marriage records of Greene Co., GA, Dr. Sankey married Ann Thompson Daniel in Greene Co., GA in 1801. She was daughter of William and Hannah (Cunningham) Daniel. It appears that they were cousins. Dr. Sankey’s tombstone shows his death as 1811. His widow, Ann (Daniel) Sankey remarried to Drury Towns, Feb. 9, 1814 in Greene Co. There is a small cemetery in Greene Co., GA, about two miles east of Bethesda Church which is known as the Sankey-Towns-Daniels cemetery. There are 4 marked graves as follows: Samuel H. Sankey, son of Dr. John T. Sankey and his wife, who departed this life on the 25th of Sept. A.D. 1820, aged 10 years, 11 months, 18 days. Benjamin W. Towns, son of Drury & Ann Towns, who departed this life 3rd of October A.D. 1826, aged 6 years & 11 months, 26 days. Ann Towns, Daughter of William Daniels, who departed this life 12th of October A.D. in the 46th year of her age; Light is sown for the righteous and gladness for the upright in Heart. Infant of Drury & Ann Towns. An article titled "Some of the Descendants of the Rev. John Thomson (c. 1690-1733)," by John Goodwin Herndon is found in Genealogies of VA Families from the Virginia Magazine of History & Biography. Mr. Herndon states that John Thomson Sankey was the son of the Rev. Richard Sankey who moved from PA to Pr. Edward Co., VA ca. 1759. Rev. Richard Sankey was a very well-known and respected Presbyterian minister in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Mr. Herndon states that Dr. John T. Sankey had sons: (1) Richard Thomson Sankey "who graduated in medicine in 1827 from the University of Pennsylvania"; and (2) William Daniel Sankey. I've not found proof of this but it does appear Dr. Sankey had more than one child as in 1827 the orphans of John T. Sankey were listed in the Georgia Land Lottery as receiving land grants. There is just one more thing I'd like to point out although some state that Dr. John T. Sankey was a minister, it appears from records of Wilkes Co., GA that he was actually a practicing physician. Mr. Herndon's article states that he graduated from Hampden-Sydney, class of 1788.
